In mid June we started our butterfly garden. I had saw the advertisement on tv and thought it looked super neat and then one day while venturing into our downtown toy store I saw they actually sold the kits and decided to buy one. I thought it'd be some good educational fun for the kiddos this summer and it was exactly that. We sent for our larvae aka caterpillars. They come contained, above, with all the food and goods needed to from chrysalids. After about a week they became chrysalids and hung from the top of their container. At that point we removed them from the container above and moved them into the garden tent.
I didn't snap a pic of the chrysalids before they all hatched but in the above you can see where one just hatched and a few other still awaiting to do so.

The kids would check the garden daily to see if any were about to hatch. They turn bright black and sometime shake when it's about time
When all five finally hatched the fun began.. especially for Kennedy. She's our little creature lover and would play with them and take them places. I think they ventured to g-ma's a couple of times. Here she is showing them off to her friend Reese.
In the morning when we ate breakfast the butterflies would also eat. They were fed some sugar water on a cotton ball.
I think all the kids enjoyed watching them in the garden.
A few neat pics of Kennedy 'playing' with them.
They were painted so they were quite pretty when all spread out.
We were getting ready to go camping for a week so I thought this would be the perfect time to set them free. I think we kept them a good 10 days before releasing them. Kennedy was reluctant, at first, to let them go but decided it'd be for the best after a little pep talk. I was super proud of out little sweetie for setting them free. We do hope to see them again or some similar to them. :)
